The model service specification, produced by NHS England sets out the ambitions for excellent wheelchair service and provides CCGs with a framework for them to use with their service users, providers and suppliers to commission services that meet the needs of wheelchair users and their families.

Wheelchair data published for October-December 2016

NHS England has published wheelchair data for October to December 2016 (Q3).

The data shows that waiting times continue to increase:  in Q2 25.4% of children were waiting more than 18 weeks for a wheelchair, increasing to 26.8% in Q3.

In Q2, 16% of adults were waiting more than 18 weeks for their wheelchair, increasing to 18.5% in Q3. CCGs are expected to use this data to target areas for improvement.

Wheelchair data for July to September 2016


It shows an increase in waits of more than 18 weeks for a wheelchair by children compared to the previous quarter.There has also been an increase in adults waiting over 18 weeks. Submissions for Q3 will be open from 3 to 16 January 2017. CCGs will need to use this data to develop improvement plans

Fourth wheelchair dataset published

NHS England has established a national data collection to enable the gathering and dissemination of data that can be used for benchmarking and improving the commissioning of wheelchair services and outcomes for wheelchair users. It has published the fourth wheelchair services dataset, including data from April to June 2016.

NHS England will work with eleven CCGs based in two localities to improve services for wheelchair users.
