Cranio-Cervical Trauma Eidemiology, Classification, Diagnosis and Management

Objective: To provide an overview of current knowledge of the management of Cranio-Cervical (Occipito-cervical) injuries.

Conclusion: Cranio-cervical injuries constitute a significant proportion of high velocity trauma and can be missed. There is a need for high index of suspicion in such patients. Recent trends seem to favour surgical management of these injuries even in the elderly. Aim should be early surgical fixation wherever possible even in elderly patients, if there is no significant co-morbidity or contraindication for surgery.

New rehab garden helps hospital patients return home with confidence

Leamington Spa Hospital has opened a garden to rehabilitate patients who have experienced brain injuries, strokes and amputations.

Lead physiotherapist Lucy Gwynne described the garden as ‘unique’ and said its design aims to improve the balance, mobility and confidence of patients in dealing with everyday hazards on foot and in wheelchairs.

The features of the garden are a slalom course, stepping stone path, uneven surface, bridge, activity board, wire loop challenge and cognitive therapy facilities.

Magnetic Resonance investigation into the mechanisms involved in the development of high-altitude cerebral edema

Rapid ascent to high altitude commonly results in acute mountain sickness, and on occasion potentially fatal high-altitude cerebral edema. The exact pathophysiological mechanisms behind these syndromes remain to be determined. We report a study in which 12 subjects were exposed to a FiO2 = 0.12 for 22 h and underwent serial magnetic resonance imaging sequences to enable measurement of middle cerebral artery velocity, flow and diameter, and brain parenchymal, cerebrospinal fluid and cerebral venous volumes.

First annual report from Each Baby Counts programme

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has published the first annual report of Each Baby Counts.

This quality improvement programme aims to halve the number of stillbirths, neonatal deaths and severe brain injuries by 2020. The report uses 2015 data to argue for improvement in the quality of local investigations into cases of death or injury occurring during term labour.
